Celebrate The Festival of Lights at Benares
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in India and among Indian communities worldwide. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The word "Diwali" is derived from the Sanskrit term Deepavali, meaning "rows of beautifully arranged lights."
Traditionally, Diwali is rooted in the ancient Indian epic of the Ramayana, where one can find the first ever mention of the festival. It marks the return of Lord Rama to his birthplace, the Kingdom of Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana, as told in the epic Ramayana. As per the legend, citizens of Ayodhya lit oil lamps to welcome him home after 14 years of forced exile, and this practice continues today in modern day India with homes, streets, and temples illuminated by candles, diyas (earthen oil lamps), and colorful lights.
The festival spans five days. Preparations begin with decorating homes, purchasing new clothes and linen, and preparing delicious sweets and other delicacies. Families immerse themselves into communal activities such as theatric depictions of the Ramayana, performed in vast open spaces that double up as fairs and amusement parks. Many participate in religious rituals, including offering prayers to Goddesses Lakshmi and Kali, to seek blessings for wealth, prosperity and well-being. Fireworks, feasting, and exchanging gifts are also central to the celebrations.
Beyond its religious roots, Diwali is a time for renewal, reflection, and togetherness. It brings communities together in joy and harmony, making it not just a Hindu festival, but a celebration of light and hope for all.
